Hull City owner Acun Ilicali says progress is being made in the club’s search for a new head coach, though he is prepared to wait if needed to land the right candidate.
Speaking from London, where he held further talks on Wednesday, Ilicali confirmed he and his recruitment team had met with two candidates. He expects a decision within the next week but cautioned that finding the right fit could take longer.
“We had two manager meetings, and today was a beautiful day,” he told Hull Live. “We’re at a good point. I think we’re at least two steps closer.”
Ilicali confirmed Emre Belözoğlu and Michael Beale were among those interviewed but said fans were unaware of other names in the frame. One candidate, he added, is becoming a stronger option day by day.
It is becoming increasingly apparent that the candidate in question likely to be former Liverpool winger Albert Riera.
Ilicali stressed that financial demands also play a role. “The more successful a manager is, the more the budget goes up. We have spending limits in the Championship, and we can’t go too far from them.”
The owner, who sacked Ruben Selles last week after City secured safety, said it was a difficult decision, but one made with long-term ambition in mind.
“Ruben is a fantastic guy and did well to keep us up, but I want a manager who can deliver results and entertaining football. That’s the balance we’re trying to find.”
Ilicali dismissed rumours he is stepping down from his vice-president role at Fenerbahce and reiterated his full commitment to Hull City’s future.
