Hull City are reportedly targeting Albert Riera as their preferred candidate to become the club’s next head coach.

The former Liverpool and Manchester City winger is currently in charge of NK Celje in Slovenia, where he has impressed during his second spell at the club. According to journalist Alan Nixon, City are working to bring Riera to England.

Riera has previously managed Olimpija Ljubljana and Bordeaux and is believed to be keen on a move to the Championship.

He appeared suddenly on the bookies list of candidates this morning at 8/1, and has since surged to replace Miron Muslic as favourite at 1/2.

City are continuing talks with several candidates following the departure of Ruben Selles, who guided the club to safety but was dismissed shortly after the season ended. Selles has since been linked with Huddersfield Town.

Owner Acun Ilicali confirmed on Wednesday that progress was being made and that a decision could be finalised within a week.

“One of our five candidates is looking more suitable day by day,” said Ilicali. “But none of you know the name.”
